Introducing this update
This report follows a visit to astrid's family and uses a standard format to
ensure that it provides an update on how Astrid
and her famlly are and outlines the work that Plan is doing with them and their
whole community.
Strengthening a bond
Astrid's mother Vilma told us that Astrid enjoys playing with dolls, and helps
her family with small errands. Perhaps you
would like to know more about these activities? Or perhaps about her life in the
community? Below are same key facts, but
please also write and send greetings to Astrid and her family. Although Astrid
is already attending school, she is still not
able to write her own letters yet, but we will work with her and her family so
they can send you a message.
Astrid's Health
Astrid has been healthy over the last year.
Astrid's Education
Astrid is attending the preschool.
Her performance over the last year has been average.
Her favourite lesson at school is drawing.
She travels by foot and it takes her less than 30 minutes to get there.
Astrid's family situation
There have been no changes to who lives with Astrid.
We would like to explain that it is sometimes difficult to obtain accurate
information from foster families. For instance, birth
dates and the spelling of names are not given high importance in Guatemala, and
there is aften no birth certificate available
to check. Therefore, same of the basic family information contained in this
letter might now differ, depending on the family
member who was interviewed and the time since it was previously collected.
However, it does come from the most recent interview held with the foster family.
The family's access to basic services
Astrid's family use a private latrine for their toilet facilities.
There is enough water during both rainy and dry seasons. It comes from a
domestic connection officially instalied.
The water is safe to drink at all times.
The nearest health worker is the traditional birth attendant who lives about
forty five minutes away.
What has been happening in the area where Astrid lives
The projects undertaken to benefit Astrid's community include:
Plan is committed to promoting the rights of the child. Plan informs children,
their parents, teachers and community
leaders of children's rights to protection against abuse and violence, and in
other aspects such as recreation and play.
Through running community children's groups and selected national events,
awareness is raised and child rights are
advanced.
Following the development plans produced by each community, the priorities for
the area continued to be health and
education and we hired additional specialists to support the communities in
their work in these areas. We supported
primary education in all the communities, focusing on quality and promoting
an approach whereby children are actively
involved in their learning and advance at their own pace. Through this approach,
which has the approval and co-operation
of the Ministry of Education, parents are also directly involved in the schools
and links between the school and the
community are strengthened. With technical support from local organisations, we
have also provided training in food
security and animal-raising to counter the problems faced by those whose harvests
were badly affected by the lack of
rainfall. This has helpd to ensure that families have enough food and a
varied diet.
The Government does not provide primary or pre-schools with nearly enough school
materials, and poor families cannot
afford to buy them. Children's education suffers sometimes, they do not even go
to school because their parents do not
want to admit they are unable to provide for their families. To give children
the best chances for development and
learning, Plan provided the family with school materials during the year
Nearly all rural families use wood for cooking, usually on dangerous open fires
within the house. Smoke dirties the house
and causes respiratory problems. A lot of wood is used and so natural resources
are becoming exhausted. Women and girls
spend hours every day collecting wood. Plan assisted the family with a
fuel-efficient stove, which uses 50% less wood and
keeps smoke out of the house.
In the traditional primary school system, children have to pass an annual exam
to complete the school year and so graduate
to the next. But many children help their parents in the fields at planting and
harvest, or go with the family when it seeks
seasonal work elsewhere. They may miss weeks of school and so fail to pass the
year or even drop out. Plan is introducing
an alternative methodology in the community's primary school based on modular
work, with high parent and student
involvement in the running of the school. This should have an impact on school
attendance and completion rates, and on
the social and personal development of the children.
Even with only a little land, there are still opportunities for families to
produce more and better food. Plan helped the
community with practical training and demonstration plots for families to learn
about new crops and better cultivation
techniques (particularly for vegetables and fruit trees); the rearing and care
of small farm animals and poultry, and the
cultivation of medicinal plants. Small-scale irrigation and crop storage schemes
and techniques, and organic alternatives to chemical fertilisers and pesticides are included. Families have more to eat and
a betler diet.
Plan helps the community - children and adults - to formulate longer-term
development plans for the community's future
development projects. If sufficient knowledge and skills remain in the Community
atter Plan leaves, it can better continue
with its self-development in a sustainable way. During the year, Plan also
provided training in project management skills to
community leaders and volunteers.
We hope you have enjoyed reading this report. We will continue to work with the
community to improve the life of Astrid
and all the other children in the area, for them to be able to realize their
potential.
Through your link with Astrid you share in the work of the whole community. Your
contributions help to fund community
projects that families are doing with Plan to benefit their children. We thank
you for your continued commitment..

Dear Mr Hornebo,
I
am sure you are eager to hear about the progress made by Astrid and her family.
For this report I visited Astrid's family and spoke with Astrid's mother Vilma.
We talked about many things and during Dur conversation she told me of the
changes which had taken place in the last year both for the family and also
within the community.
-
Astrid's progress
Let
me start by telling you about Astrid. The attached photograph will show you how
she has grown over the year and Vilma told me that she enjoys playing with dolls.
However, Astrid is still tao young to help her family at home. Astrid has
started going to the preschool now and Vilma said that she is excited to join
other children from her community. She traveis by foot and it takes her jess
than 30 minutes to get there. Over the last year Astrid's performance at school
has been average. Her favourite lesson at school is drawing.
Strengthening
a friendship
Although
Astrid is already attending school, she is still not able to write her own
letters yet. For children in this part of the world, writing letters is quite
different from learning to write at school and children are aften very shy about
their writing. However, we will encourage her tocommunicate with you in other
ways, perhaps by sending you a drawing. VILMA, her mother, will be writing
letters to you on behalf of Astrid's family who are looking forward to
strengthening their friendship with you. It gives them a warm feeling to see
that you have shown concern for them.
Astrid's
family
Since
there have been same changes to the family living in the household over the past
year I would, therefore, like to introduce you again to those living with
Astrid.
Walter
Aparicio, her father. He works as a government worker. Vilma, her mother. She
works as a housewife. Walter Aparicio, her brother.
Reyna
Elizabeth, her new sister. Vilma was excited to tell me about the birth of
Astrid's new sister who was delivered in January at home.
We
would like to explain that it is sometimes difficult to obtain accurate
information from foster families. For instance, birth dates and the speiling of
names are not given high importance in Guatemala, and there is aften no birth
certificate available to check. Therefore, same of the basic family information
contained in this letter might now differ, depending on the family member who
was interviewed and the time since it was previously collected. However, it does
come from the most recent interview held with the foster family.
Astrid's
health
Vilma
told me that fortunately Astrid has been healthy over the last year. Astrid,
Walter Aparicio, Reyna Elizabeth is attending a growth monitoring program. In
this program children are weighed regularly to check whether they need
supplementary food. Astrid, Walter Aparicio, Reyna Elizabeth are receiving the
basic vaccinations on time.
Progress
and achievements
Like
most poor communities, living conditions in Cocales are difficult with a
multitude of problems affecting children, their
families
and the entire community. Astrid and her family together with their friends and
neighbours have worked hard over the last year to address same of these
problems. Participating in community meetings and sharing responsibility for
carrying out projects has been important in developing the community's
partnership with Plan.
All
their efforts together with your valuable support have made the foliowing
projects possible, projects that will benefit the whole community either now or
in the future.
The
Government does not provide primary or pre-schools with nearly enough school
